What is The Frontier AI Taskforce?

The Frontier AI Taskforce, a UK government initiative, is making significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Its mission is to ensure the safe and responsible development of AI technologies while simultaneously exploring the potential risks and benefits that AI brings to the table. 

The Taskforce is a part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), and its activities are guided by a team of experts drawn from various fields, including national security and computer science.

Assembling the Taskforce: An Expert Advisory Board

The Taskforce has recently established an expert advisory board that brings together some of the world’s leading figures in AI research, safety, and national security. This board includes renowned AI researchers like Yoshua Bengio, known for his groundbreaking work in deep learning, and Paul Christiano, a leading researcher in AI alignment. 

The board also includes key figures from the UK’s national security community, such as Matt Collins, the UK’s Deputy National Security Adviser for Intelligence, Defence and Security, and Anne Keast-Butler, the director of GCHQ

The Mission: Evaluating Risks and Opportunities in AI

The groups primary mission is to build an AI research team capable of evaluating risks associated with AI advancements. As AI systems evolve, they could potentially augment risks in various sectors.

For instance, an AI system that excels at writing software could increase cybersecurity threats, while an AI system proficient in modelling biology could escalate biosecurity threats. 

As Ian Hogarth, the Taskforce chair, explains, these evaluations must be developed by a neutral third party to ensure that AI companies are not marking their own homework.

The Team: Recruiting Expert AI Researchers

The Taskforce continues to actively recruit technical AI experts, drawing on world-leading expertise. Yarin Gal, a globally recognised leader in Machine Learning, has joined as Research Director of the Taskforce. David Krueger, an Assistant Professor at the University of Cambridge’s Computational and Biological Learning lab, will also work with the Taskforce.

The government has already assembled a team of AI researchers with over 50 years of collective experience at the frontier of AI. The team includes researchers from leading AI organisations such as DeepMind, Microsoft, Redwood Research, The Center for AI Safety, and the Center for Human Compatible AI.

The Focus: Frontier AI and Its Potential Risks

The Frontier AI Taskforce, formerly known as the Foundation Model Taskforce, is primarily focused on ‘Frontier AI’. These are AI systems that could pose significant risks to public safety and global security if not developed responsibly. These systems, trained on vast amounts of data, hold enormous potential to power economic growth, drive scientific progress, and offer wider public benefits.

The Future: Strengthening the UK’s Capabilities in AI

The Taskforce’s work does not stop at evaluating risks. It is also tasked with identifying new uses for AI in the public sector and strengthening the UK’s capabilities in AI. 

The UK government has committed £100 million in funding to support the Taskforce’s mission. This commitment is a testament to the government’s recognition of the transformative potential of AI in various sectors, from healthcare to climate change mitigation.
